Baraga County was named after Bishop Frederic Baraga, consecrated as the Upper Peninsula’s first Bishop on November 1, 1853. In 1875, the state legislature officially approved the county’s formation. The county consists of 904.16 square miles (578,664 acres) of land area and 164.40 square miles (105,217 acres) of water area. Population totaled 8,746 at the time of the 2000 Census.
