Something for everyone all year round. Come and explore the beautiful countryside of Baraga County when the splendors of spring bring the roar of rushing water to our numerous waterfalls. Hike throughout the wilderness of Canyon Falls which is sometimes known as “The Grand Canyon of the U.P.,” or venture to Point Abbey for a spectacular view of the Huron Mountains. In the sizzle of summer enjoy the deep blue waters of Keweenaw Bay or one of our 1,080 inland lakes, ponds, and reservoirs. Make your way to the summits of Little Mountain and Silver Mountain in autumn for a panoramic view of the landscape in a blaze of oranges, reds and yellows or stand on top of Mount Arvon and declare you’ve been to Michigan’s highest point! With the arrival of the Marquette, Houghton & Ontonagon railroad to the bay around 1872, the region’s strategic importance appeared to be confirmed. In preparation for such a strategic role, a lighthouse was erected at the mouth of the bay on an outcropping of land known as Sand Point.
